Artist's Description

Abandoned POW camp in Door County, WI, near Ellison Bay. I've found references that this was a POW camp housing German prisoners during WWII. Some of the buildings had old stoves and refrigerators in them but were so dilapidated it was unsafe to get photos. Interesting history, the German prisoners were used to harvest cherries and work on local farms. The prisoners were guarded but not locked up. Many of the prisoners befriended local residents and a few were have said to migrate to Door County after the war. In late 2013 or early 2014 a storm blew most of the ruins down. As of mid 2015 every remnant was removed from the site.

About Chuck De La Rosa

Chuck De La Rosa

Welcome! My fascination with photography is linked to my fascination with the things around me, what I see. The shapes. The colors. The textures. The grandeur of a mountain scene, the solitude of a flowing water fall, the sadness and beauty of an abandoned but once useful building. And the ability to capture it all on a digital sensor. I visualize, even before I press the shutter, the final framed print showing the wonder and detail of what I saw when I was there. In these galleries you will find scenic and landscape photos, abandoned architecture, the Milwaukee Art Museum and surrounding area, as well as many photos of Door County, WI. An area I call the jewel of Wisconsin. Thank you for visiting! I hope you enjoy your visit and ask...
